🌀 Hurricane Facts & Tips

Let's learn about hurricanes and how to help!

🌀

What is a Hurricane?

A hurricane is a giant tropical storm that spins like a top! It forms over warm ocean water and can be hundreds of miles wide. These powerful storms bring strong winds, heavy rain, and can cause flooding when they reach land.

Hurricane Categories

Scientists measure hurricanes by their wind speed using the Saffir-Simpson Scale:

Category 1

74-95 mph winds

Category 2

96-110 mph winds

Category 3

111-129 mph winds

Category 4

130-156 mph winds

Category 5

157+ mph winds

The Hurricane's Eye

The eye is the calmest part of the hurricane! It's right in the middle of the storm where the sky might even be clear. But don't be fooled - the calm doesn't last long, and the strong winds will return soon.

Keeping Pets Safe

Our furry friends need help during hurricanes too! Make sure to:

  • Keep pets inside with the family
  • Pack pet food and water in your supplies
  • Have a carrier ready for each pet
  • Keep their ID tags updated
  • Pack their medicines if they need any
💧

Water Supply

A family of 4 needs about 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water per person per day. For a 3-day supply, that's:

4 people × 1 gallon × 3 days = 12 gallons total
(Extra tip: Add more for pets!)
